Evolution towards the global brain.
Observation of the evolution of IT with its concomitant science reveals a powerful tendency towards greater unity and generality. For example: a) The convergence of functionalities in cell-phones. b) Consolidation of enterprise software. c) Mash-ups, SOA etc.
The simple reason is that it is more important to optimise overall maxima rather than local maxima. People seek maximum connectivity and generality, however this leads to increased complexity. The natural culmination of this convergence, placed in the context of social connectivity, is the creation of a unified super-organism called the Global Brain.
Practically speaking, consider a typical IT infrastructure of a large enterprise comprising many heterogeneous systems. A single unified platform for all enterprise activities remains an apparently utopian ideal. If an enterprise were to attain this goal, it would become far more efficient and cost-effective than its fragmented competitors. Unfortunately their unified system will still need to communicate with the existing disparate external systems. Consequently, the world will gravitate to a single platform, enabling seamless knowledge sharing and e-commerce.
This unified knowledge base will grow, becoming a GLOBAL BRAIN for our planet. This is not achievable with hyperlinked text, RDF triples, complex inflexible relational data bases and currently available technologies.
What is needed is the ability to express knowledge in a machine processable form in real-time to reflect the complexity and dynamic nature of the real world.
The Global Brain must have the human capability of acting on its own knowledge.

Over the past decade we have discovered several deep facts about the nature of information and knowledge, including knowledge as a generator of processes (for example: the knowledge embedded in DNA that creates the process of life). This has enabled us to develop a new symbolic calculus for semantics - the language of knowledge. Armed with this theory we have created an entirely new architecture and infrastructure platform.
